The City of Charlottetown has been approached by two large property owners in Marshfield, outside of the city’s jurisdiction, looking to be annexed into the city.
The two properties in question are located very close to the city’s boundary in the East Royalty area, on the backside of the Charlottetown Airport property.
“We’ve been approached by a couple of large land owners in this area to join onto the city and become part of the city,’’ said Peter Kelly, Charlottetown’s chief administrative officer. “They have reached out to us to see if it’s possible. Council gave me the authority to begin having some dialogue with the community.’’
There was a community meeting this past Monday night in Marshfield that included representatives from the provincial government and two representatives from the Three Rivers area, which is going through its own amalgamation process.
Kelly was at that meeting and stressed the City of Charlottetown is not actively trying to bring these property owners into the community.
“At the end of the day, it was just a preliminary discussion,” said Kelly. “I encouraged the community to get together on their own without us to discuss what they want. We’ll get back together in October for another community meeting.’’
If there is an application to join the city, it would have to go before the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) since Marshfield is an unincorporated area. If it reaches this point, residents would have a chance to speak on it.
