Progress is being made on a plan to connect Charlottetown with Stratford through a multipurpose trail across Hillsborough Bridge, with work maybe starting in May.

The plan would see one of the sidewalks on the Hillsborough Bridge widened and turned into a multi-purpose trail for pedestrians and cyclists.

The width of the bridge will not change. The final design will be reviewed by the province with input from Stratford and Charlottetown.

The province issued a request for proposals this month to select a consultant to carry out the design. The successful consultant will provide three design options and each must incorporate the city’s active transportation master plan and the Eastern Gateway Plan.

The plans must also ensure easy and safe access for all using the new trail from both sides.

The province expects that construction will begin 2023 and be completed no later than September of 2024.
