CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The P.E.I. NDP has set a date for its leadership convention, and efforts are underway to recruit candidates for party leader.

The convention will be held Saturday, April 7, and the party says it has identified several potential candidates whose names will be released over the coming weeks.

To date, no one has officially declared an intention to take over as leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island following the resignation last month of former party leader Mike Redmond.

A search committee with representatives from across the Island has been formed. The committee chairwoman is Marian White with assistance from Thomas Burleigh and Dr. Herb Dickieson, who have been working on screening candidates in preparation for a spring leadership selection.

“We will have a democratic leadership selection process open to progressive candidates of diverse backgrounds,” said party president Leah-Jane Hayward.

“Today’s market-driven economy has created some winners, but many have fallen behind, and our environment has suffered. New Democrats place the needs and aspirations of Islanders in the forefront. The party is seeking a leader to project our positive vision providing equality of opportunity in a sustainable economy protecting our Island for future generations.”

Islanders who are interested in throwing their hat into the NDP leadership are being invited to contact Hayward at [email protected] or call 902-394-2609.
