A former Summerside councillor now wants to represent Charlottetown residents.

Ron Dowling has announced that he’ll seek the Ward 1-Queens Square council seat in the next municipal election.

Having moved back to his hometown of Charlottetown four years ago, Dowling now lives in the historic downtown core with his wife Donna.

He holds a bachelor of integrated studies (business), a public administration diploma, certificates in management development, human resource management, conflict resolution studies and business from UPEI, as well as a police science certificate from Holland College.

After service with the Summerside police department, Dowling was elected to city council for 14 years over four terms, during which time he chaired the Fire Services, Economic Development, Technical Services and Finance committees.

After his fourth term, he had the opportunity to return to Charlottetown, where he has previously been employed as Chief Sheriff for 12 years.

Dowling has been involved with many community service organizations, encompassing a wide variety of social issues such as youth engagement, crime prevention, family violence prevention and child sexual assault prevention.

“I have always felt a strong desire to contribute to my community and have found the challenges and civic engagement offered through service on municipal council to be particularly appealing,” said Dowling. “Should I be elected to serve as councillor for Ward 1, it is my commitment to be accessible and responsive and to work in the best interest of my constituency.”

Dowling believes door-to-door campaigning is essential and that personal discussions with voters is required to gain full understanding of the needs of residents and business owners alike.
