CORNWALL, P.E.I. - Eva Sulis, owner of the Orange Lantern Beauty Salon in Cornwall, will mark 60 years as a hairdresser on Saturday, June 23.
Now 75, Sulis started her career at the age of 16 in Digby, N.S.
“In those days, you were expected to get out and work when you could,” said Sulis, who comes from a family of 17 siblings and “everyone in the family did their part to contribute and look after themselves.”
She was trained by the owner of Fidele’s Beauty Salon in Digby and later moved to P.E.I. where she worked at a local salon in Charlottetown.
She opened her beauty shop in her home in the early 1970s with the help of friends, and her business has been a part of her home ever since.
Sulis says she has made many friends over the years and continues to have her regular customers, who come for a visit, a cup of tea and a hairstyle.
Now that she is semi-retired, she still enjoys weekly appointments with her regular customers.
