CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The chairman of the parks and recreation committee believes the city’s new smoke free places bylaw has more teeth than the last one.

Coun. Mitchell Tweel said the city first established a tobacco free policy for indoor and outdoor recreational sports facilities in 2009.

Council gave second and final reading to the new bylaw recently.

“The city will take steps as to display signs at appropriate recreation and sports facilities and properties and send a notification letter to all current users and inform all new users and promote to general public through social media and other media sources," said Tweel.

“Although enforcement of smoking restrictions is often deemed as a concern for municipalities, studies have shown that the fear of the issue with compliance exceeds the number of actual problems."
