Generous Islanders moved by the plight of a Charlottetown family whose house was ruined by floodwaters have been coming forward to help the family rebuild their home and their lives.
Over 100 millimetres of rain was dumped on P.E.I. two weekends ago, causing the 54-foot wall in Frank Wood’s basement to collapse, ripping out the plumbing and leaving the home unstable and unsuitable to live in.
His home owner insurance with Dominion of Canada did not cover the extensive damage to his home.
He went public about his ordeal to warn others that no insurance company covers damage caused by ground or surface water. But after hearing about his sad predicament, Islanders have started reaching out to help Wood and his family.
Friends and acquaintances have been helping to clean out the wrecked basement, and other volunteers have joined in the clean-up effort. Many have even been sending in money.
“People have been dropping by and helping out and some have offered to donate money,” Wood said.
“It’s really great to know that people are out there willing to help.”
So many people were calling and dropping by, asking how they can donate money, Wood’s brother, Kevin, set up a trust fund at the Metro Credit Union for the family so people have somewhere to send donations.
Businesses have also been coming forward and offering in-kind donations and services.
Blair Lapierre, who owns Mr. Plumber, and several of his employees have offered  labour and equipment to help Wood re-install the heating and plumbing in his Brackley Point Road home.
Manager Blair Smith said he and his colleagues were saddened to hear of Wood’s plight and they wanted to help.
“We feel that he’s in a situation that almost any one of us could be in and it’s just really too bad the way things are going for him so we wanted to do what we could to help out.”
Smith said many were especially sympathetic when they learned that Wood had just finished building an addition to the back of the house to make a room for his father-in-law, who is dying of brain and lung cancer.
“It just really tugged at the heartstrings and you just feel really bad that this was going to turn out like this.”
That’s why Mr. Plumber is also issuing a challenge to other local contractors to help supply equipment and labour to help the Wood family rebuild their home.
Others have also been offering aid. A mystery donor has hired a construction crew to shore up the house and ready it to receive a new foundation. Little Christo’s pizza gave free food to the volunteers helping out with the clean up and Flex Mussels restaurant on the waterfront treated the Wood family to a full meal, compliments of the house.
“My daughter Jolisse just thought that was the greatest thing. She got all dressed up and asked her mom to do her hair,” Wood said.
“She was princess for a day so that was really great of them to do that for us.”
The family’s life was sent into turmoil when their home was wrecked, but things are starting to look up due to the kindness of Islanders.
“It’s nice to know that there’s people out there who are willing to help people that they don’t even know,” Wood said.
“I’ve never been the person who needed it, but it’s nice. It’s taking a lot of the stress off.”
Grant said he believes more people will come forward and help the Wood family rebuild their lives.
“It’s just the Island way,” he said.

Susan from Summerside, PEi writes: I am so happy to hear that the Wood family is getting help and support. The first thing I did when I read the story was check with my insurance company and they do not cover such things, makes you wonder why we bother to get insurance at all.

Todays story makes me proud to be an Islander.

PEI-Nurse from PEI writes: This story has tugged at my heart strings like no other in quite some time.
I am so proud to be an Islander and know that as usual Islanders come together as one in times of trouble. I made a $100 donation to this family this morning at Metro Credit Union. I'm an RN and I challenge all other PEI RN's to meet or beat my donation to this family as they try to rebuild their lives. Good Luck to the Woods family and I commend everyone who has come together to help in this time of need. What a wonderful early Christmas Gift they are receiving from all their PEI neighbors!

Keith Doyle from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec writes: Great work, Islanders. I knew some of you would come to the rescue of Mr. Wood and his family. And a special congratulations to the Mr. Plumber company and employees. Anyone needing plumbing work should consider calling you as well as other companies and restaurants who have helped out.

Responsible for safety from PE writes: A great thing for people to volunteer, I applaud you all. You are good hearted.

Shame on the insurance industry for what they do to those who can afford it least. Billions of dollars of profits jammed in their pockets though.

One negative on the article is the picture of the lack of chain saw safety gear, fall arrest and general construction safety personal protective equipment.

It appears that the only place the Workers Compensation Inspectors will get you on PEI is on University Ave in Charlottetown.

Kinlock Creek is an accident waiting to happen, Andrews Lodge in Stratford the same, roofing contractors would scare you almost as much as the electricians up in the bucket trucks working on streetlights with no helmets, no fall arrest and the knuckle of the boom out in traffic just waiting for the speeding 53 foot trailer to hit it.

The accident is coming.......soon

CHARITY COMES FROM THE HEART, BUT PLEASE USE YOUR HEAD WHEN DECIDING WHERE IT GOES.
SERIOUSLY, TAKING A BOBCAT AND DIGGING OUT A CLAY BASEMENT AN ADDITIONAL 2 FEET BELOW A 6 FOOT FROST WALL AND NOT SUPPORTING IT, WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT???? TAKE A LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL GUARDIAN PHOTO OF MR WOOD KNEELING ON THE FALLEN PART OF THE WALL, AND THE REMAINING STANDING PART. WHY IS THERE A TWO FOOT GAP ON TOP OF THE WALL TO THE HOUSE SILL?????????????????

Isabelle MacPhee from Charlottetown, PEI writes: I use to live away and have recently moved back to PEI. I was born here. This is just another mircle story thanks makes me so glad to be back home. I recently gave a 100.00 to this family in their time of need. I read all the stories and am so glad their are people out there who feel the way I do. Alot of the older homes had stone walls or even blocks that with stood the test of time. You can go to some old homes and still see to this day foundations standing. I just wanted to make a comment that the walls did not fall down the water did the damage it is a very powerful element. So for those of you saying it was the walls fault or Mr. Woods fault please read to the story again as the adjuster deemed to damage to water not the wall.

water works from Charlottetown, PEI writes: Wonderful story I too will be sending a donation. It is amazing the stories you hear about other situations that happened to other people and their insuarnce companies. Did the city water and sewer ever get any slack for this?? There were never any ditches. I think they should go to the CREDIT UNION and make a donation!!! They make enough off, of us!!!!!!

Jayne from pei writes: I dont understand how you heartless people can sleep at night! talk about kicking a family when they are down! Your just simple people that have such pathetic lives you have to pick on someone else to make yourself feel better. Islanders don't want to hear the negative things you have to say. Especially those that have been sympathetic and understanding. I'm pretty sure you would want the same kind of Island hospitality if this were you!!

READER FEEDBACK
What is your opinion of the 30-page application form to be filled out by potential leadership candidates for the Progressive Conservative Party of P.E.I.?

This is a great idea. The party should know all that it can about their next leader.
It is a bit excessive. Is it really relevant to know whether a potential leader cheated on a high school exam?
